Tourist Day

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
Today was dedicated to doing a proper exploration of Hanoi – the lake, the cathedral, Temple of Literature, Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum, the Hanoi Hilton, the One-Pillar Pagoda, the ‘electronic marketplace’ etc. We covered everything on foot and enjoyed getting lost in between sights and seeing the other, less well-known aspects of Hà Nội. Near the Temple of Literature we saw an old man with his shaving station set up and Dave decided he was looking a bit rugged and should get a shave. However, Dave bargained pretty hard and then felt quite uncomfortable the entire time as the grumpy old man ran his switch blade temptingly close to his throat… We tipped him as thanks for not drawing blood and hurriedly continued on our way while he still grumbled about the payment.

We had an evening out planned seeing the famous ‘Water Puppet Theatre’, which, painful singing aside, was really quite entertaining with colourful puppets, clever stories and talented puppeteers. The only downside to our touristy day was that Sarah was back on another course of Amoxicillin as her earache that had been around for a few days was getting so bad that she was in a fair amount of constant pain. We were really hoping to avoid a trip to the doctors, but if things didn’t improve overnight that was exactly where we were going to end up the following day….
